Casualties

The Civil War was America's single bloodiest war that was ever fought.  Roughly 2% of the population of that time died aka 620,000 men.  Many died from disease and infection.  Sickness was a major problem, and the new improvements in military weaponry did not help.  The Vietnam War was the next bloodiest battle of United States History.
